Text description provided by the architects. The sharp-edged, polygonal structure sticks out in its uniqueness among the current development in Trittau, a town north-east of Hamburg. The differently inclined roof surfaces of the new administrative building of the Raiffeisenbank eG Südstormarn Mölln are a new interpretation of the townscape’s characteristic roofs.

A generous incision on the north side marks the main entrance area in an otherwise closed shape. Inspired by rural construction and typical local materials, the entire structure is wrapped in reddish-brown turf-stoved bricks. The red bitumen covered roof uses its surfaces sloped to the south for solar energy.

Floor Plan

In contrast to the angular façade the layout of offices inside follows an economical pattern and can easily and flexibly be reconfigured through the use of light-weight walls - if the need for a possible extension of the building arises.

In addition to the lightly coloured offices of about 70 employees the building also contains rooms with higher visitor traffic as for example the lobby, the conference rooms, the staff room and management area. Curved walls and cove lighting for indirect lighting enhance the dynamic spatial situations. Large windows connect the interior with the exterior.

The aim of the design was the construction of a sustainable building with an even energy balance, a building that ensures optimum comfort while simultaneously consuming minimal energy. A thermal-bridge-free building envelope, triple glazing, high insulation and concrete core cooling ensure a low heating demand.

The combination of a large photovoltaic system and the use of a geothermal heat pump and an all year ground-storage facility provide an energy balance of nearly zero. The ventilation system with highly efficient heat recovery provides the workplaces with fresh air and controls the indoor climate. Noise, pollen and germs remain outside. Of course, the windows can still be opened individually maintaining the connection to the green surroundings.

Floor Plan

Due to the type of construction and materials used the administrative headquarters are practically a zero energy house. By reducing the energy consumption in combination with a low need for renewal of the high quality materials used the operation of the building is sustainable.
